How Airlines Use Twitter

Media_httptravel2dot0_bzwfc

While flying back to the states from Toronto, I was curious to see how quickly airlines responded to tweets from consumers. I had seen numerous reports and articles about how the airline industry was utilizing Twitter as a customer service platform, but a part of me was not sure that all airlines were living up to the JetBlue hype.

When my flight from Toronto (via @AirCanada) was delayed I knew I would miss my connection in Chicago (via @UnitedAirlines). The ideal time to send some test tweets.

I tweeted both airlines with a typical message...kudos for Air Canada and a question / request for help towards @UnitedAirlines.

@AirCanada wrote back within the hour.

@UnitedAirlines never said a peep. Or a tweet.

While some airlines are using Twitter as an extension of their customer service efforts, others (@UnitedAirlines) are still not listening.

The report says Twitter.com users are visiting the site 37% more than they did a year ago (the blue lines above), while spending less time during each visit (the red lines). It’s worth noting that Twitter began launching its new home page in September, right about the time that the visits graph (blue) really starts to trend upward.

My Favorite Tweets (a Social Network Song)

A social network song for Facebook and Twitter addicts. Conceived and created by World Wide Wadio (with apologies to Rodgers and Hammerstein). Keynote animation by Dave Fey Design. http://www.wadio.com/favoritetweets.html

Lyrics:

Posting and blogging and chatting and tweeting
While both pretending we're part of this meeting
I friended you and then you followed me
We began networking socially

Sharing and commenting, poking and liking
Even while showering, even while hiking
Having no message won't stand in our way
We tweet to say we have nothing to say

Facebook and Flickr and YouTube and Twitter
Our productivity's gone down the shitter
FarmVille and Fish Life and Mafia Wars
Now we've become social media whores!

Posting pictures... sending quizzes...
Seems it never ends
And when we both post fifty times every hour
We really piss off our friends!

Twitter: discover what's new in your world

Twitter is the best way to discover what's new in your world. From football to film to philanthropy, people are using Twitter to discover what's new about what they find interesting.

Twitter has always been about getting a lot in a little. The constraint of 140 characters drives conciseness and lets you quickly discover and share what's happening. Yet, we've learned something since starting Twitter—life doesn't always fit into 140 characters or less.

Introducing a new, re-engineered Twitter.com that provides an easier, faster, and richer experience.

On the site, you'll see the familiar timeline, yet underneath each Tweet is a handful of information, deeper context and even embedded media. Simply click on an individual Tweet and a details pane slides out on the right and reveals this content.

Heavy Twitter Users Bring Social Activity to New Heights

“Consumers active on Twitter are clearly the most influential online,” said Morgan Stewart, principal at ExactTarget’s research and education group, in a statement. “What happens on Twitter doesn’t stay on Twitter. While the number of active Twitter users is less than Facebook or email, the concentration of highly engaged and influential content creators is unrivaled—it’s become the gathering place for content creators whose influence spills over into every other corner of the internet.”
