US local mobile ad revenues are set to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 57% from 2009 through 2014, according to a forecast by BIA/Kelsey.
Facebook recently announced that the site now has 150 million mobile users worldwide. Much of this has to do with the rapid growth of app usage, specifically on smartphones.Perhaps not surprisingly, social networking apps are the the fastest growing category of all apps, with download rates increasing by 240% in the last year. Of these, Facebook apps are tend to be the most popular; in fact, Facebook is the number one app across most mobile operating systems. Branding, like you see in ads on TV and the Internet, won't work on mobile phones--the displays are simply too small, and the user's attention too focused, for a tiny brand banner to sink into the consciousness. Yet mobile phones are the future of media. Ads, therefore, have to be far more targeted, context aware, and easy to understand.
Sales of Google Android phones in the U.S. are rising so quickly, the devices have outsold Apple handsets for the first time on record. New smartphone subscribers choosing Google phones accounted for 27 percent of U.S. smartphone sales, the Nielsen Company will announce this morning, nudging past the 23 percent share held by Apple. But Android isn’t just a U.S. phenomenon: Canalys today estimates that Android handset sales grew 886 percent worldwide from the year ago quarter.
